Cosmetic Injectable Consultation Tips | Cosmetic Nurse Amy
I'm going to say something that might sound dramatic, but I mean every word of it: your consultation is the single most important part of your entire cosmetic injectables business.
Not your technique. Not your product knowledge. Not your Instagram following. Your consultation.
After fourteen years of cosmetic injecting and nine years of running my own clinic, I can trace the trajectory of my business growth directly back to the moment I systemised my consultation process. The referrals, the retention, the revenue, the reduction in complaints... it all came from getting this one thing right.
And yet, consultations are one of the most overlooked, undercooked skills in our industry. We get taught how to inject. We get taught anatomy and products and complications management. But nobody ever teaches us how to actually consult. How to structure that critical interaction. How to make it consistent, compliant, and memorable, every single time.
That's a problem. And it's one I want to help you fix.
What a Consultation Actually Is (And What It's Not)
Let's clear something up first, because I see this constantly. A consultation is NOT a quick chat before you start injecting. It's not a casual conversation. It's not a checklist you march through. It's not a sales pitch. And it's definitely not something you "wing" based on how busy you are or how late you're running.
A good consultation is intentional, structured, and delivered the same way every time... regardless of who is sitting in front of you, how tired you are, how many clients you've seen today, or how sharp your memory is.
When I reframed the consultation in my own practice, I stopped seeing it as a formality and started seeing it for what it really is:
A business strategy. A revenue generator. And an insurance policy... all in one.
A strong consultation protects you legally, keeps you compliant, lowers your risk, builds trust, elevates your professionalism, increases retention, improves outcomes, and makes clients feel safe and informed. Everything gets easier when you get this right.
The Three C's: My Framework for Every Consultation
In my clinic, every consultation my team and I deliver revolves around three pillars. I call them the Three C's: Connection, Communication, and Compliance (or as I like to say... Covering Your Ass).
Connection is where trust begins. And here's the thing... you don't have to be overly extroverted or have a big personality to create connection with your client. It's not about being the same age, the same "type of person," or having the same background. Connection happens naturally when the client feels seen, listened to, and like their best interests are your genuine priority.
It comes from micro-behaviours that most people underestimate. Sitting down fully, not half-perched. Anchoring your body toward them. Making eye contact when they speak. Not typing while they talk through their concerns. Matching their pace... if they're nervous, slow down. Letting them finish their thoughts without interjecting. These tiny things are the difference between a client who thinks "I saw an injector once" and a client who says "this is MY injector."
Communication is the education part of the consultation, but not in the way most injectors think. Communication is NOT "I explained everything to them." Communication IS "did they understand it? Could they repeat the key points back in their own words? Will they remember it later when they look in the mirror?"
That distinction has saved me from countless headaches over the years. Because most complaints in cosmetic injecting don't come from clinical issues. They come from communication breakdowns. Timelines not explained properly. Realistic expectations not set. Normal side effects not normalised. A client who messages you two weeks later saying "I can't move my muscles but my lines are all still there" isn't experiencing a complication... they're experiencing a consultation that missed one critical piece of information.
And then there's Compliance... covering your ass. This includes valid consent, accurate medical screening, photos from every required angle, quoting correctly, documenting properly, explaining risks clearly, flagging red flags, knowing when to say no, and delivering aftercare verbally and digitally. One missed step can cost you everything, even when nothing clinically went wrong. Think of compliance as your ultimate protection.
When all three are woven together... connection, communication, and compliance... your consultation becomes premium, professional, safe, structured, memorable, and repeatable. That's where confidence in your practice begins.
How I Learned This the Hard Way
When I first started out in 2017, I had maybe three or four clients booked in each week. Those were some long, quiet days. But I realised that with so few clients, I needed to make the absolute most of the time I had them in my room. This person sitting across from me could choose to visit me again and again, trust me with their face, and bring their friends and family with them... or they could literally never set foot in my clinic again.
So I put every bit of energy and focus into those early clients. Reading their expressions, gauging their reactions, even the way I worded the medical questionnaire and used my voice when asking questions. I developed a script, a routine dialogue I rolled with each time, and built into it the answers to the questions clients always asked, before they asked them. They felt like they were in the best of hands. They knew they were safe. They trusted me.
The word-of-mouth referrals started to flow in.
But as my days got busier... ten clients instead of one or two... things started to slip. I'd forget a before-photo here, a signature on a form there. If I missed one single element of the consultation, I'd come into my clinic the next morning to find a heap of messages from clients, all with concerns about things that weren't actual problems, just missed information I hadn't properly told them.
I realised I needed a system. A consultation structure I could fall back on and rely on, even when I was exhausted, busy, distracted, or overwhelmed. So I created one.
What Changed When I Systemised My Consultation
I built out a consultation process that covered absolutely everything. Not just the critical information I had to say to clients, not just the compliance points, but even the little rapport-building comments, the witty little jokes along the way... every single thing that made my consultations not only thorough, but a wonderful experience.
Once it was systemised, the results were immediate.
Clients were still blown away by their experience, but in much less time. Next-day follow-up questions disappeared. The trust I built with clients was rock-solid. Word-of-mouth referrals exploded. There was zero pressure to worry about social media advertising. And I was finally able to see more clients safely and confidently.
I could map on a graph the trajectory of the business, and how it grew organically and quickly, when I nailed my consultations in this way. Every single time.
Practical Things You Can Implement Today
I want to give you a few things you can take away and use right now, because I don't believe in gatekeeping information that could help you and your clients.
Start every consultation with what I call the Certainty Sentence. Before you launch into your medical questionnaire, say: "Before we get started, can you show me which areas you'd like us to look at today?" This one sentence confirms they're actually booked for what they think they're booked for, and it stops you diving into a consultation about the wrong treatment area. It sounds simple, but it might be the most important sentence in your entire consultation.
Pay attention to the tone you use during medical screening. Use upward inflection... friendly, non-judgmental. "Do you smoke? You do? How many per day, would you say?" versus "You don't smoke, do you? Ohh... how many?!" The first approach says "I'm not here to judge you, I just want to get to know you so I can serve you the best I can." The second implies there's a right and wrong answer, and your client will either lie or feel judged. Neither is good for trust.
Use visual aids. Clients learn about what we're educating them on much better through simple diagrams, photos, pointing to their own anatomy, and simple analogies. When they can see what you're explaining, misunderstandings vanish. I've refined this over the years in my own practice, turning the entire consultation into a visual, step-by-step experience that clients can actually follow and remember.
And document everything. What you said. What they said. What you found. What you recommended. What you declined, and what they declined. What they understood and acknowledged. If it's not documented or photographed, it didn't happen. Good documentation has saved more careers than good injecting skills.
Your Consultation Is Your Calling Card
The minute your consultation becomes all-encompassing, consistent, and structured, your entire practice shifts. You feel more confident. Your clients can feel this, and they relax, and trust you, feeling that you're knowledgeable and they're in good, practised hands. Your retention naturally increases. Your documentation improves. Your compliance becomes tighter.
It IS the backbone of the entire client journey. And once you master it, the rest of your practice becomes so much easier.
I've put together a free 40+ page guide called The Ultimate Consultation Guide, where I walk you through the foundational principles of building your own structured, systemised consultation... the framework, the flow, the mindset, and the practical tips I've developed over fourteen years of consulting thousands of clients. It's the resource I wish I'd had when I was starting out.
