The Unsung Hero of Your Cosmetic Injectables Practice: Why Proper Aftercare Instructions Change Everything

September 09, 20269 min read

I want to talk about something that most cosmetic injectors don't think about nearly enough. Something that sits quietly in the background of your practice, doing more heavy lifting than almost anything else you do... and yet it's probably one of the last things you invested any real time in creating.

Your aftercare instructions.

I know. Not the most glamorous topic. But after fourteen years of cosmetic injecting and nine years of running my own clinic, I can tell you with absolute certainty that the quality of your aftercare materials is one of the biggest differentiators between a practice that runs smoothly and one that's constantly putting out fires.

And I learnt that the hard way.

The Problem Nobody Talks About

Early on in my career, my aftercare process was... loose. I'd verbally run through the key points at the end of a treatment, hand over a generic printed sheet I'd thrown together, and send the client on their way. It felt like enough. The treatment was the main event, right? The aftercare was just the bit at the end.

Until I started noticing a pattern.

Every morning, I'd walk into my clinic to a string of messages from yesterday's clients. "Is this normal?" "My lips are really swollen, should I be worried?" "One side looks different from the other, did something go wrong?" "When does the Botox kick in? It's been two days and nothing's happened."

None of these were actual problems. Every single one was a normal, expected post-treatment outcome that I had either forgotten to mention, mentioned too quickly for them to absorb, or explained verbally in a way that didn't stick once they got home and looked in the mirror.

And every single one required my time, my energy, and my attention to resolve. Phone calls, text messages, sometimes bringing them back in for a review that wasn't clinically necessary... just so I could reassure them about something they should have already known before they left.

It was exhausting. It was time-consuming. And it was completely avoidable.

Your Aftercare Isn't Just Information. It's Protection.

When I finally sat down and properly built out my aftercare materials, I realised something that changed how I thought about them entirely.

Good aftercare instructions aren't just about telling clients what to do after treatment. They're about protecting your clients, your time, your reputation, and your career... all at once.

Here's what I mean.

They protect your clients by giving them clear, comprehensive, written instructions that they can refer back to at home. Because let's be honest... your clients are not absorbing everything you say to them verbally at the end of an appointment. They've just had needles in their face. Their adrenaline is up. They're thinking about whether they like the result, whether the swelling will go down, whether they can make it to their dinner reservation. Half of what you said out loud went in one ear and out the other, and that's not their fault... it's just human nature.

Written aftercare that goes home with them (or is sent digitally) means the information is always there, always accessible, always consistent. At midnight when they're staring in the mirror wondering if their swelling is normal, they don't need to text you... they can check the sheet.

They protect you legally. If a complaint arises, if something goes wrong, if a client claims they weren't told about a particular side effect or risk... your aftercare documentation is part of your evidence trail. It proves you communicated the information. It proves the client had access to it. It's not a substitute for verbal communication, but it's a critical backup that shows you followed best practice.

They protect your time. Every question a client asks you the next day about a normal, expected outcome is time you're spending on something that didn't need to happen. When your aftercare materials are thorough enough to pre-empt those questions... when they clearly explain what's normal, what's not, what to do if they're concerned, and who to call in an emergency... those next-day messages drop dramatically. I noticed the difference within the first week of implementing proper sheets. My mornings went from a barrage of concerned texts to maybe one or two genuine queries. That's not a small thing when you've got a full day of clients ahead of you.

And they elevate your professionalism in a way that clients notice immediately. When someone receives a detailed, clearly written, beautifully formatted aftercare sheet that covers everything they could possibly need to know... they feel looked after. They feel like they're in the hands of someone who has thought of everything. That level of detail and care builds trust, reinforces the premium experience you're delivering, and gives clients confidence that they chose the right injector.

What Good Aftercare Actually Looks Like

So what does proper aftercare actually include? Because there's a massive difference between a generic one-page printout and a genuinely useful aftercare resource.

Let me walk you through what I include in my clinic's aftercare sheets, because the level of detail matters.

For lip dermal filler, for example, my aftercare covers normal post-treatment outcomes first... swelling of the lips and surrounding skin (and how it temporarily distorts the appearance of results), tenderness to the touch, redness, and bruising. And I don't just list "bruising" and leave it at that. I explain that bruising can vary in severity from person to person and from treatment to treatment. That it can appear immediately, hours later, or even several days after treatment. That the length of time a bruise lasts, and how dark it appears, also varies. And critically, I include a line that says bruising is not a sign of your injector not being skilled or performing a conscientious treatment... it's a very normal and common outcome of lip filler.

That one line alone has prevented so many worried messages. Because without it, a client who bruises badly can start to wonder "did my injector do something wrong?" And that thought, left unaddressed, can erode trust fast.

Then I cover adverse reactions separately. Clear, specific symptoms that are NOT normal... greyish or blanched skin, mottled or netted-looking skin, continuous dull pain, blurred or impaired vision... with an explicit instruction to call our after-hours number immediately if they notice any of these. This section is there for safety, obviously, but it also serves the purpose of helping clients distinguish between "normal and expected" and "not normal, call us." Without that distinction, every bit of swelling feels like a potential emergency to a nervous client.

Then there are detailed post-treatment instructions to promote healing... don't touch the treatment sites, avoid makeup until the following day, avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours, no active skincare products for 24 hours, ice application guidance with specific timing (ten minutes on, ten minutes rest, and don't hold ice longer than 30 seconds as the anaesthetic may prevent you from realising the area is cooled enough). Avoid heat-based activities for at least five days.

And then there's the section most injectors skip entirely: the healing window. Explaining to clients that lips are famous for giving a very misleading "look" in the first few days and weeks. That what they see in the mirror may not reflect the discussion or treatment goals, and to rest assured that as each day passes, the shape, size, and overall appearance will gradually settle into a more pleasing, desired outcome.

For anti-wrinkle treatments, the level of detail is just as important but the content is different. Normal outcomes like tenderness at injection sites, small lumps similar to mosquito bites, redness, slight bruising, dull headaches. Post-treatment instructions covering no heat-based activities for five days, no strenuous exercise for 24 hours, no face-down massages for 48 hours.

And then the section that saves me more headaches than any other: the results and review timeline. Explaining that the length of time it takes to see changes varies for everyone. That it's normal for results to feel "incomplete" or still settling during the initial two-week period. That slight asymmetries, one area starting to change before the other, or minor differences are simply the natural process of the treatment taking effect. And an invitation to return on the fourteenth day for a complimentary review to assess results and ensure everything has settled symmetrically.

The static fine lines section alone is worth its weight in gold. Explaining that lines etched into the skin from years of muscle movement may not completely resolve with toxin treatment. That the goal is to reduce muscle movement, and completely removing pre-existing static lines may take much longer, if it happens at all. Without this explanation, you get the dreaded "I can't move my muscles but my lines are all still there" message... which, as we all know, is a perfectly normal outcome but feels like a failure to the client who wasn't properly informed.

The Difference Between Good and Great

Here's the thing. Most clinics have some form of aftercare. A printed page. A quick verbal rundown. Maybe a link to a generic PDF they found online. And look, that's better than nothing.

But there's a massive gap between "we have aftercare" and "our aftercare is so thorough, so clear, and so professionally presented that our clients feel genuinely looked after, our next-day enquiries have dropped by 80%, and our compliance documentation is airtight."

The clinics that operate at the highest level... the ones with rock-solid retention, minimal complaints, and a reputation for premium service... they've invested in this. Not because aftercare is glamorous, but because it's the invisible infrastructure that makes everything else work. It reduces your mental load. It reduces your next-day stress. It reduces your legal risk. And it elevates every single client interaction, because the experience doesn't end when they walk out the door... it extends into the days and weeks that follow, guided by materials that continue to educate, reassure, and protect.

Think of your aftercare sheets as a team member who works for you around the clock. Answering questions at midnight. Reassuring clients about normal swelling at 6am. Reminding them when to come back for their review. Distinguishing normal bruising from a genuine emergency. All without you lifting a finger or checking your phone.

That's the power of getting this right.

Stop Starting From Scratch

If you're reading this and thinking "my aftercare needs work"... I get it. Building comprehensive, professional, treatment-specific aftercare from scratch takes time. Time you probably don't have between treating clients, running a business, managing your team, and trying to have a life outside of work.

That's exactly why I created the Ultimate Aftercare Bundle. It's the complete set of editable aftercare sheets that I use in my own clinic, covering lip filler, anti-wrinkle treatments, and more... each one comprehensive, professionally formatted, and designed to be customised with your own clinic name, phone number, and branding. They're ready to use straight out of the box, or you can make them your own.

Because you shouldn't have to spend hours building something from scratch when the framework already exists. Your time is better spent doing what you do best... treating clients, growing your business, and actually going home at the end of the day without a phone full of worried messages.
